Recently at Penn, I had the chance to attend the Ethnography Forum, which was focused a lot around teacher research. It was really great to see how many teachers came from far and wide to understand how to better incorporate inquiry in their every day teaching. I loved getting the chance to hear about what other teachers and other teacher researchers would examining in classroom settings. It was also incredibly helpful for my thesis, or as we call it, my inquiry project. Seeing how other researchers presented their findings made it a lot more clear to me what I should be looking at in my classroom and how to share the successes and failures in my own research.
At my school, my students got an amazing opportunity to see Reggie Dabbs, and inspirational speaker and saxophonist.
Here's a short video that will give you an idea of who Reggie is and what he brings to the schools he visits:

He was absolutely amazing to watch! He was so engaging. Between his music and his message of perseverance, he had my students absolutely captivated. Students at Temple University are helping my class create a newspaper to distribute to the school at the end of the year. One of my students happily stepped up to the plate to interview Reggie about his work and his message. She came up with such great questions and it was really amazing to see my students so engaged and inspired.
This year at Penn and my school placement has really taught me how important resources are. It's incredibly important to know the community you are working in. Penn has so many amazing connections that can help you grow as a teacher, and getting to know the community you teach in is an incredible way to grow as an educator. Taking as many opportunities to help students engage and grow in the classroom is such an important aspect of teaching, and it's something Penn helps to make extremely easy.
As I'm nearing the end of my program, I'm realizing how much I've grown as a teacher. I'm realizing how many important things I've learned that I'm not sure I would have had the opportunity to learn elsewhere. Penn has placed me in a school that suits me and my future goals so perfectly, and through that, I have been exposed to so many opportunities that have completely altered and shaped who I am as an educator.
It's really amazing to reflect on my growth and how Penn has aided in that growth.
